And according to a new UK study, you should be looking for events that combine exercise with volunteering. Researchers looked at a variety of events that bring people together not simply to socialize, but to work toward some useful end. Participants who took part in such events reported lower levels of loneliness and better mental health, along with stronger feelings of belonging, social connectedness and trust.
What makes the findings especially interesting is that the program wasn't designed to counter loneliness. Instead, connection emerged through shared activity and contribution:showing up, exercising alongside other people, volunteering, and becoming part of a community. Reported benefits persisted beyond six months.
The study is observational rather than a randomized experiment, so it can't establish that the program itself caused all of the improvements. But it adds to a growing body of research suggesting that social connection may be easier to build when it is a byproduct of doing something together rather than the explicit goal.
